The Nikkei Stock Average fell 47 points, or 0.07%, to 65,968 at the close of the morning session on the Tokyo stock market on the 24th. Investors adopted a wait-and-see stance ahead of Nvidia's quarterly earnings on the 26th and the Jackson Hole Symposium, a U.S. Federal Reserve-hosted economic conference where Fed Chair Powell is scheduled to speak. AI-related stocks, including Fujikura and SoftBank Group, declined, while Tokyo Electron rose as investors selectively bought semiconductor-equipment makers. TOPIX edged up 0.1%. A Bloomberg report that Nvidia had told some major customers it would raise AI server prices by more than 15% amid soaring memory prices raised concerns about profitability at Nvidia-linked companies. Nomura Securities equity strategist Wataru Akiyama said those concerns were a pretext for selling after margin-buying positions had built up, adding that the earnings-growth outlook for AI and semiconductor companies remained unchanged. Persistent uncertainty over the Middle East, stronger inflation concerns and speculation that the Bank of Japan could raise interest rates at its September policy meeting pushed Japanese long-term yields higher and weighed on equities. Akiyama said rising bond yields could make it difficult for the Japanese equity market to sustain its current uptrend.
