The ASX 200 fell 37 points, or 0.4%, to 9,128 on Wednesday, ending a two-session advance. Sentiment weakened as U.S. futures were mostly lower before the PCE inflation report later today and Fed Chair Warsh’s Jackson Hole speech on Friday. Australia’s July headline inflation exceeded forecasts on fuel and travel costs, while core inflation was also unexpectedly higher, increasing the risk of another rate hike. Construction work declined 2.1% quarter on quarter in the second quarter, contrary to expectations for growth. Technology, communications and energy minerals led the market lower, while non-energy minerals and retail trade limited the decline. Lynas Rare Earths tumbled 3.9% after missing profit estimates, and two of the big four banks fell between 0.1% and 1.1%. Evolution Mining rose 0.4% as gold prices strengthened, while Woolworths surged 3.7% after reporting a sharp profit increase and warning that tighter household budgets would drive shoppers toward bargains.
