Chelsea is seriously considering Emiliano Martinez as a solution to growing concerns over Robert Sanchez, with intermediaries offering Aston Villa’s 33-year-old goalkeeper to Chelsea and Tottenham for less than £10 million. Martinez, who helped Argentina win the 2022 World Cup, has wanted to leave Villa for two consecutive summers. The club’s signing of Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma as a direct replacement has opened the way for a transfer, despite Martinez’s contract running through 2029 after an extension signed in August 2024. A proposed move to Juventus previously collapsed, prompting Martinez’s camp to focus on English clubs. The Premier League summer transfer window closes at 23:00 BST on September 1, 2026, leaving limited time for negotiations. Martinez missed Villa’s season opener because of fitness issues linked to his post-World Cup schedule. Since joining from Arsenal for £17 million in 2020, he has made more than 250 appearances for Villa, received FIFA recognition as the best men’s goalkeeper and contributed to the club’s Europa League title in 2026.
