Canadian residents took 5.5 million trips that included a visit to the US in the first three months of 2026, down 10.6% from a year earlier, extending a sharp retreat that began in 2025. Statistics Canada said border crossings remained around late-2025 levels, signaling a persistent shift away from the US after President Donald Trump imposed broad tariffs on Canada and Mexico in early 2025. The decline has continued as trade tensions flare: US-Canada talks broke down last week, fresh 50% US tariffs on roughly $20 billion of Canadian imports took effect on Saturday, and Canada said it would retaliate dollar for dollar from September 8. The country announced targeted tariffs Tuesday on 700 US products, while Trump said Monday that tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks, auto parts, and steel would rise to 50% from January 1, 2027. Canadian trips to the US fell 25.4% in 2025, the deepest and most sustained non-pandemic decline on record, with 11 consecutive months of year-over-year decreases. Domestic travel rose by 5 million visits and overseas trips by 1.3 million in 2025, including increases of 13.6% to Europe and 16.7% to Asia. Leisure trips to the US dropped 21.5%, or 3.2 million visits, while Canadian spending on US trips fell $3.3 billion to $18.8 billion. Tourism experts said the shift could become a lasting change in travel habits, diverting spending to competing destinations and hurting border communities and warm-weather markets.
