Iran will target US economic interests with intensity and force if the maritime blockade continues, Mohsen Rezaei, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Secretary, said Thursday, according to state broadcaster IRIB. Rezaei said Iran had broken the maritime blockade during the ceasefire, exporting between 70 million and 80 million barrels of oil, and that sales had returned to their pre-sanctions level. He said Iran was clearing floating stocks and developing new export routes that were gradually expanding. On Lebanon, Rezaei called Beirut and its southern suburbs a red line for Tehran, said no one had the right to move toward them, and said Israel would be forced to withdraw from occupied areas in Lebanon. US President Donald Trump said earlier that the Strait of Hormuz was open and that the US had control and the blockade. The comments follow a mid-June, 14-point memorandum of understanding signed by Iran and the US in Islamabad with Pakistani and Qatari mediation. The agreement covered ending hostilities, reopening the strait, lifting a US naval blockade and starting a 60-day negotiation process. Tehran says Washington has failed to implement key provisions and that the strait will not fully reopen until the US meets its commitments.
