A government selection committee finalized Muan County as the site for relocating Gwangju’s military air base, clearing the way for an accelerated 800 trillion won ($582.9 billion) semiconductor and AI cluster across Gwangju and surrounding regions. The committee was led by the defense ministry and included municipal government officials. The new site will host the 1st Fighter Wing, currently based at Gwangju’s air base. Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are participating in the project. The defense ministry said the final designation puts the relocation project into full motion and creates the groundwork for a swift process with relevant agencies.
