A Ukrainian drone strike set fire to Russia’s Kirishi oil refinery in Leningrad Oblast during the night of August 29-30, according to the reported account. The facility is about 100 kilometers southeast of St. Petersburg and more than 800 kilometers from Ukraine’s border, highlighting the reach of Kyiv’s long-range drone operations. Leningrad Oblast Governor Alexander Drozdenko said 42 drones were intercepted over the region, while Ukrainian sources reported direct hits, visible damage and a subsequent fire. No casualties were reported. Operated by Surgutneftegaz, the refinery processes approximately 17.5 million to 18 million tons of crude oil annually, equal to roughly 6%-7% of Russia’s refining capacity. It is also an important supplier of refined fuels for export through Russia’s Baltic Sea ports. The strike marked the facility’s third reported targeting in 2026, following attacks in March and May that damaged processing units and caused temporary shutdowns. The incident comes amid an intensifying Ukrainian campaign against Russian energy infrastructure since 2024-2025, with refineries reporting fires, shutdowns and lower throughput. Repeated attacks on Kirishi suggest its export-oriented production and access to Baltic shipping infrastructure make it a particularly valuable objective for Ukraine.
