Kalshi, a prediction market (platform for trading event outcomes), suspended Republican House candidate Laurie Buckhout for three years after determining she wagered on her own race against Rep. Don Davis (D-N.C.). Buckhout bought less than $1,000 in related contracts after launching her candidacy in North Carolina’s 1st Congressional District last December, violating Kalshi Rule 5.17(z), which bars traders from betting on events over which they have decision-making authority or influence. The settlement took effect Friday and includes a $2,589.96 penalty. Buckhout won the GOP primary in March and is set for a rematch with Davis, who defeated her in 2024 by less than 2 percentage points. Kalshi has also suspended other candidates over similar wagers and separately banned former Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) for life, fining him $71,356 over wagers concerning his attendance at this year’s State of the Union.
