MapQuest is refusing to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America, diverging from Google Maps after President Donald Trump's executive order and amid an ongoing U.S.-Canada trade war. The company said hundreds of thousands of people downloaded its app after the decision, with usage reaching 50 times average levels in recent days. Sensor Tower data cited by TechCrunch showed 162,000 U.S. downloads and 184,000 global downloads for the week beginning Aug. 24. MapQuest ranked first among U.S. navigation apps, fourth among U.S. apps excluding games in the East Coast region, and second in Canada. Its parent, System1, saw shares rise 25.4% to $2.37 after trading as high as $2.63, although the stock remained down 40% in 2026.
