President Lee Jae Myung said he could cancel Lee Hyeong-il’s nomination for Minister of Economy and Planning if Chuseok price stability is not achieved. The remarks came after Lee Hyeong-il repeatedly promised to control seasonal-goods prices, prompting what government sources described as a joke with substance. Lee Hyeong-il, a former first vice minister of the Ministry of Finance and Economy, was nominated on August 30 to succeed former Deputy Prime Minister Koo Yun-cheol. President Lee also accepted the resignation of Kim Yong-beom, presidential chief of staff for policy, and instructed officials to develop additional measures. The government warned of strict enforcement against exorbitant pricing at tourist destinations, including a possible immediate five-day suspension for businesses that fail to display prices or violate displayed prices on a first offense. It also plans to reduce holiday costs by linking local currency discount support, funded through total funding, with the issuance of Onnuri gift certificates.
