Liquidity spread broadly across the top 100 altcoins and tokens in August, with 83% recording positive gains despite the month being described as Bitcoin season. Bitcoin recovered the $80,000 level several times, but the wider group outperformed BTC over three months, and CoinMarketCap data showed 26 altcoins and tokens significantly ahead of it. Cryptorank said market breadth reached a yearly high, indicating that liquidity was reaching selected assets rather than new launches and mints. Traders favored older tokens with established utility and exchange availability, with only limited meme-token activity. The altcoin market gained more than 26% in August while maintaining 20% market dominance, making it the strongest month for crypto overall in 2026. Activity centered on applications, DEXs (decentralized exchanges), perpetual futures (contracts without expiration), and fee generation. ZCash rose more than 80%, XMR gained 44%, Hyperliquid’s HYPE added 60% and moved above $80, and Solana increased 40% over 30 days. TRON gained only 1% despite stronger on-chain and application activity, underscoring that the rally was selective. The outlook for September remains uncertain: Bitcoin has historically performed weakly during the month, while resistance near $80,000 for BTC and below $100 for SOL could lead to stagnation or declines.
