BYD Co. delivered 440,293 vehicles in August, an 18% year-over-year increase and its fourth straight month of annual growth. Exports surged 134.5% to a record 189,466 vehicles, accounting for roughly 43% of deliveries as the Chinese automaker relies increasingly on Southeast Asia, Europe and South America. Passenger vehicles made up about 90% of sales, with battery electric vehicles rising 28% to 256,230 units and plug-in hybrids increasing 3% to 177,154 units. The improvement followed production-line changes for next-generation batteries that disrupted output during the first six months of 2026. Even so, BYD remains below the delivery pace needed to reach its full-year goal of 5 million to 5.5 million vehicles. Overseas sales exceeded half of group revenue for the first time in the first half of the year. The expansion faces scrutiny over alleged subcontractor labor abuses at BYD's flagship factory in Hungary, while the European Union is weighing tariffs on Chinese hybrids, according to a June Handelsblatt report. BYD said it complies with local laws and regulations.
