Kalshi suspended Republican House candidate Laurie Buckhout for three years after finding she bought less than $1,000 in contracts related to her own candidacy. Buckhout is challenging Democratic Representative Don Davis in North Carolina’s 1st Congressional District. She agreed to pay a $2,589.96 penalty, exceeding the value of her bets, and accepted the findings, suspension and penalty after cooperating with Kalshi’s inquiry. Rule 5.17(z) prohibits traders with direct or indirect influence over an event from trading contracts on it, a condition that applies to candidates on the ballot. The action followed a lifetime ban and penalty of more than $70,000 against former congressman George Santos and measures involving a White House teleprompter operator who bet on Trump’s speech text. Kalshi introduced three market-integrity measures in June, while Representative Bryan Steil filed a bill that would bar lawmakers from betting on political outcomes and impose fines and forfeited gains.
