South Korea will hold a public hearing on a basic law for digital assets in late September regardless of whether the government submits its own bill. Min Byoung-dug, senior vice chair of the Democratic Party’s policy committee, made the comments after a debate on crypto asset taxation at the National Assembly today. The Financial Services Commission (South Korea’s financial regulator) plans to submit the government proposal to the National Assembly’s Political Affairs Committee in early September. Min said the bill may arrive in a somewhat eased form, including possible relaxation of rules limiting major shareholders’ equity stakes in crypto exchanges. Those ownership restrictions have been widely cited as a key sticking point behind delays in creating the legal framework.
