President Lee Jae Myung ordered a review of National Pension and Basic Pension rules after highlighting cases involving foreigners and people who acquired Korean nationality later in life. He cited foreigners joining the pension system for about one month, making post-payments for 11 months and then receiving pensions, as well as Basic Pension rules that can provide benefits immediately when income and asset criteria are met. Lee directed officials to consider a minimum domestic residence period and to examine fairness loopholes across all social security systems and government-funded projects. He also called for intensive personnel and system reforms in the police organization ahead of the establishment of the public prosecution office and serious crimes investigation agency in a month, following criticism linked to recent public safety incidents.
