The KOSPI opened more than 1% higher as easing U.S. 10-year Treasury yield pressure and dovish remarks from Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller supported large-cap technology stocks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.2% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.4% overnight. Samsung Electronics rose 1.60% to ₩254,000, while SK Hynix gained 2.13% to ₩1.63 million, with elite traders apparently taking profits in SK Hynix and semiconductor equipment stocks after their sharp gains. Foreign and institutional investors were net buyers across the main markets, while retail investors sold. By 10:44 a.m., the KOSPI had risen 1.04% to 6,647.68 and the KOSDAQ had gained 1.44% to 801.55. A record-strength July current account surplus, driven by semiconductor exports that increased 176.3% year over year, added support to AI semiconductor-related stocks. Robotics shares also advanced, led by Robotis, which climbed 18.91%. Analysts cited China’s humanoid-robot development, potential replacement demand in North America and improved macroeconomic conditions. The selective activity of top-return traders contrasted with a broader increase in short-term trading, as August turnover rates for SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics rose sharply from a year earlier.
