US stock indices finished mostly lower Friday after nonfarm payrolls increased by 162,000 from the previous month, far exceeding expectations for a gain of just over 50,000 jobs. The stronger labor-market data gave the Federal Reserve more room to raise interest rates and aligned with FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee) members’ statements that the labor market is at full employment. Yields rebounded, pressuring credit-sensitive sectors and several major technology and financial stocks. The S&P 500 declined 0.4% and the Dow lost 272 points, while the Nasdaq advanced 0.2%. Alphabet, Microsoft, Tesla and Palantir fell, as did JPMorgan and Visa. Chipmakers moved higher after earlier weekly underperformance, with gains led by Sandisk, Marvell and Micron amid optimism surrounding OpenAI’s new GPT model.
