Bitcoin reversed below $80,000 Friday after briefly approaching the roughly $83,000 resistance level that has contained it since February. The move followed a stronger-than-expected August jobs report, which showed employers adding 162,000 positions and pushed investors to raise expectations for a September Federal Reserve (U.S. central bank) rate hike. The unemployment rate held at 4.1%, while June and July payrolls were revised higher by a combined 55,000. The report outweighed the previous day’s rally, when Fed governor Christopher Waller said continued disinflation could justify leaving interest rates unchanged at this month’s meeting. Bitcoin, gold and other high-beta assets (assets highly sensitive to market moves) had rallied Thursday as the dollar and short-term yields fell, but many surrendered part of those gains Friday. Despite the reversal, the week ended higher for bitcoin, Coinbase, Robinhood, Strategy and SpaceX. Market attention remains focused on whether bitcoin can sustain a move above roughly $83,000, while Hardika Singh said the ethereum-to-bitcoin ratio could provide another signal during the next attempted breakout.
