Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse pointed to De Nederlandsche Bank’s 86-tonne gold reallocation as an example of how crypto networks can transfer value across borders without moving the underlying asset. Between March and August 2026, DNB sold about 59 tonnes in New York and bought market-standard gold in London, while physically moving more than 27 tonnes between North America, Zeist and London. The Netherlands’ total gold reserves were unchanged, but London’s share rose to 32.1% from 18.1%. Garlinghouse described global value transfer as an ideal use case for crypto, while acknowledging that DNB used conventional bullion markets, custody arrangements and vault infrastructure rather than blockchain technology. The comparison comes as Ripple expands institutional payments and settlement services, and as banks and governments continue adding digital-asset capabilities alongside established financial systems.
