OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra, a large language model (AI system that generates and processes text), has fueled a rally in stocks connected to Sam Altman’s company since its release last Thursday. Artificial Analysis says Astra improves on earlier OpenAI models and matches the raw power of OpenAI’s July model, but still trails products from Meta Platforms and Anthropic on its performance rankings. In practical use, however, the model delivers significant cost efficiencies compared with a comparable Anthropic system, matching Fable 5 at less than half the cost through greater token efficiency. Melius Research analyst Ben Reitzes said the launch supports further gains for OpenAI’s semiconductor and hardware suppliers, particularly Arista, AMD and Broadcom, while Oracle, Microsoft and CoreWeave are the cloud providers with the greatest exposure. Softbank, which had invested more than $64 billion in OpenAI as of February, has risen about 30% since Astra launched. Reitzes also identified memory-chip makers Micron Technology, SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics as beneficiaries because larger AI workloads require more DRAM for KV cache, the memory used to retain model context during extended tasks.
