Hydrogen Council reports $130 billion committed to 6.9 MTPA clean hydrogen capacity

  • Hydrogen Council published its Global Hydrogen Compass 2026 report on clean hydrogen deployment.
  • $130 billion supports 6.9 MTPA of committed capacity across more than 570 global projects.
  • China leads renewable capacity, Europe investment growth, and the United States low-carbon hydrogen deployment.

More than $130 billion has been committed to clean hydrogen projects representing 6.9 MTPA of capacity across over 570 projects worldwide, according to the Hydrogen Council’s Global Hydrogen Compass 2026. About 90% of those projects are under construction or operational, while global operating capacity nearly doubled over the past year and is expected to double again next year as projects are commissioned. China accounts for more than half of committed renewable hydrogen capacity and 90% of new operational capacity added globally since 2025. Europe ranks second in its region by project count and recorded 35% investment growth since 2025, while the United States represents about 75% of committed global low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia capacity. The report says existing policies could generate 11 MTPA of clean hydrogen demand by 2030, but only about 6 MTPA is currently secured by adopted and implemented measures. Governments therefore need to deploy incentives, mandates and carbon-pricing mechanisms, while industry must cut costs and build infrastructure. Developed with McKinsey & Company and informed by about 70 international CEOs, the report was launched at a global virtual event and presented at a hydrogen energy ministerial meeting in Japan.
