Canada’s Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions has finalized 2027 guidance that relaxes capital treatment for certain hedged crypto positions held by banks. Matching long and short positions in the same cryptocurrency, with the same maturity, across multiple regulated exchanges may be offset for capital purposes if specified conditions are met. Previously, banks had to calculate positions separately for each exchange, requiring capital above their actual risk. The measure is limited to “Group 2a” crypto exposures that satisfy hedge requirements; positions on unregulated exchanges or those failing the requirements remain excluded. The guidance takes effect in November 2026 or January 2027, depending on a bank’s fiscal year.
