Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is hosting dozens of global investors in Toronto to promote more than 160 projects and attract C$1 trillion ($721 billion) over five years. The summit, held mainly Tuesday after bilateral meetings on Monday, is designed to connect about 100 investors with Canadian CEOs, companies and local officials, although a government source said major deals could take 12 to 18 months. Projects span mining, energy, technology and infrastructure, including data centers, quantum computing, low-carbon nickel and high-speed transportation. Canada’s foreign direct investment flows have risen since 2022, but greenfield investment in new factories and warehouses has not significantly increased since Carney took office. Banks TD and Scotiabank announced C$150 billion and C$100 billion financing commitments, respectively. The event has also drawn protests from labor, Indigenous, housing, climate and anti-war groups, which accuse some attendees of benefiting from housing speculation, fossil-fuel expansion and defense investments.
