Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) blamed President Donald Trump’s war in Iran for higher fuel costs, citing a $4.15 national average gasoline price, nearly $1 above a year earlier and the highest September level ever. AAA put the average at $4.31 a gallon on Monday, compared with about $3.19 a year earlier, while diesel reached a record $6.20. Trump has blamed former President Joe Biden’s administration, said oil could drop sharply after the conflict, and argued that other countries should reimburse the U.S. for keeping the Strait of Hormuz open. He has forecast gasoline falling first to $3 a gallon and eventually below $2, with prices also declining somewhat after November’s midterm elections. Trump has separately urged Ukraine to stop attacking Russian oil refineries, while Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) rejected the claim that Ukraine is responsible for diesel prices. WTI crude rose 1.11% to $102.52 a barrel and Brent gained 0.13% to $106.61. Oil-linked funds also advanced, led by a 1.29% gain in the United States Brent Oil Fund.
