Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.) said President Trump is unlikely to follow technology leaders’ calls for safeguards on artificial intelligence because Trump’s family has financial interests in the industry. Ossoff pointed to 1789 Capital, where Trump’s eldest son Donald Trump Jr. is a partner, and cited the firm’s investments in AI labs and data centers. Trump dismissed concerns from current and former AI-company employees, saying the technology needs only a strong and smart president as its safeguard. His comments followed Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s plan to slow AI development while safeguards are created and implemented. Trump also invoked U.S. competition with China, ahead of a planned meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Washington next week. AI is expected to feature in the bilateral discussions, while Xi is reportedly bringing a large delegation of Chinese business leaders. Ossoff, who is seeking reelection to the Senate in Georgia, urged voters to express their dissatisfaction with Trump’s AI position at the ballot box.
