Anthropic is considering releasing a new AI model to counter OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra, which launched this month and has gained traction with businesses. The deliberations come ahead of Anthropic’s expected IPO and after CEO Dario Amodei called for the AI industry to slow the release of new capabilities because of safety concerns. OpenAI’s model accounted for about 13% of enterprise AI spending tracked by Ramp, compared with about 8% for Anthropic’s Claude Fable, while OpenRouter said OpenAI models led Anthropic models in user spending last week for the first time in more than two and a half years. Anthropic’s annualized revenue run rate exceeded $65 billion by the end of July, compared with OpenAI’s more than $40 billion in July, and Reuters previously reported that Anthropic projects 2028 revenue of roughly $190 billion to $200 billion. Investors are also watching open-source and open-weight models, which can reduce token costs and enable companies to build more AI infrastructure internally. Anthropic may delay its IPO until after the November US midterm elections; marketing was previously expected to begin in mid-October at the earliest.
