Bitcoin has approached 4 million Turkish lira as the currency weakens and high inflation erodes savers’ purchasing power. The lira is near 48.8 per dollar, while bitcoin trades at roughly 3.95 million to 3.96 million lira. The currency has lost about 18% against the dollar over the past year, and official inflation data indicate an approximately 86% decline in purchasing power over five years. The Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye’s 37% policy rate offers limited protection against official inflation of 31.51% and ENAG’s independent estimate of 49.03%. Turkish households have responded by holding gold, foreign currency, property and crypto assets outside or alongside the banking system. Türkiye ranked 14th in Chainalysis’ 2025 Global Crypto Adoption Index and led the Middle East and North Africa by transaction volume, at roughly $200 billion annually. Residents may legally buy, hold and sell bitcoin and USDT, but a 2021 central bank rule bars direct crypto payments for goods and services. The 2024 Crypto Asset Law placed platforms under the Capital Markets Board while leaving trading legal.
