Bitcoin surpassed $80,000 on Friday as a series of developments shaped the crypto market. The Altcoin Season Index, which compares the 90-day performance of the top 100 coins with Bitcoin, climbed to 48, while NEAR Protocol, Tezos, Arbitrum, Uniswap, Ethena and Zcash each gained more than 40% over the past week. SEC Chairman Paul Atkins said the agency would pursue regulatory certainty for the cryptocurrency industry regardless of whether the CLARITY Act advances, after the legislation failed in a Senate procedural vote. CoinShares Head of Research James Butterfill warned of a difficult year-end setup after Bitcoin’s move above $80,000 and said two developments could affect Bitcoin and altcoins, including Ethereum and other networks involved in stablecoin payment infrastructure. Binance Co-CEO Richard Teng reiterated a zero-tolerance policy for sanctions violations as the U.S. Justice Department sought approximately $61 million in cryptocurrency allegedly tied to black-market sales of sanctioned Iranian oil. Prosecutors suspect two Chinese companies, Blessed Trust and Hexa Whale, laundered the funds through Binance trading accounts. Separately, the Justice Department charged former Robinhood Markets, Inc. engineers Hefu Chai and Huaisong Xiang with commodities fraud and wire fraud, alleging they used confidential business information to trade perpetual futures (contracts without expiration dates) on Hyperliquid before public announcements.
