Fairshake, a crypto industry political action committee backed by Coinbase and Ripple Labs, plans to spend $30 million opposing former Ohio senator Sherrod Brown after the U.S. Senate voted 49-50 on Sept. 15 against advancing the Digital Asset Market Clarity (CLARITY) Act. The setback has reduced the bill’s prospects before 2027, although some advocates have not ruled out another vote during a lame-duck session. Brown chaired the Senate Banking Committee when Democrats held the majority and supported policies opposed by the crypto industry; he lost his 2024 reelection bid to Republican Bernie Moreno after Fairshake spent about $41 million opposing him. Industry groups including Stand With Crypto have warned that lawmakers’ CLARITY votes could affect their treatment in the 2026 midterm elections, which are 42 days away and will determine control of the House and Senate. Fairshake and affiliated PACs had not disclosed post-vote spending to the FEC as of Monday, while other crypto-aligned groups also reported no such expenditures.
