US President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet Venezuela's interim President Delcy Rodriguez at 7:40 p.m. local time, or 2340 GMT, during a reception on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. It will be their first meeting since American forces captured then-President Nicolas Maduro in a January raid. Rodriguez arrived in New York for her first US trip since taking office with a delegation including the vice president of economy, the oil minister and officials from PDVSA, Venezuela's state oil company. The delegation has held talks with US officials, multilateral lenders and companies on energy, mining and debt while seeking to present Venezuela as investable. Trump has said he wants $100 billion invested in the country's oil industry and described an oil deal signed with Caracas last month as perhaps the biggest deal ever made. Critics say Washington has sidelined the opposition led by Maria Corina Machado by prioritizing oil and investment agreements with the interim government over demands for free elections. More than 50 protesters gathered outside the UN on Tuesday to call for elections. Trump called Maduro an outlaw dictator in his General Assembly speech, said hundreds of political prisoners had been freed since Maduro's capture and cited the raid as evidence that the US would use its unmatched military might to protect its interests in the Western Hemisphere. Rodriguez is expected to address the General Assembly on Wednesday afternoon. The head of the Inter-American Development Bank is working to secure approval for a $2.5 billion loan for Venezuela, though some members of the lender's board have pushed back.
