A small group of White House officials is discussing whether to reduce President Donald Trump’s August increase in foreign beef imports as Republican concern grows ahead of the midterm elections. The discussions are taking place within the Domestic Policy Council, headed by Vince Haley, a longtime Trump speechwriter and former campaign official, and among several other White House officials, according to two people with direct knowledge who were granted anonymity. Officials remain unsure whether the talks will produce a policy change. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, or USTR, opposes reducing imports because it is seeking to lower elevated consumer beef prices in the short term and helped implement the policy. The discussions indicate an effort to ease concerns among Republicans in battleground and farm states, where high prices and Trump’s tariffs are affecting election campaigns. The White House is also preparing a diesel-export plan that will likely include exemptions amid sky-high prices linked to the Iran war.
