The S&P/TSX Composite Index edged below 36,000 on Thursday as a sharp rise in global government bond yields weighed on stocks. Canada’s 10-year government bond yield approached a three-year high, while US Treasury yields reached multi-decade highs after strong economic data and rising expectations of another Federal Reserve rate increase this year. Energy-driven inflation concerns and heightened Middle East tensions supported crude oil prices. Financial stocks were mostly flat, while falling gold prices pressured miners: Agnico Eagle, Barrick and WPM each lost more than 1%, and Kinross plunged nearly 10% after lowering its production outlook for 2026 and 2027. Energy shares advanced with oil prices, and retailers rose as estimates pointed to a strong August rebound in retail sales. BlackBerry fell more than 1% despite reporting strong 2Q26 results.
