Netflix co-chief executive Ted Sarandos said the company’s growth was slower than he wanted as the streaming giant posted 13.4% growth between April and June, its lowest rate in nearly three years. Viewing hours rose a modest 2% in the first half of 2026. Speaking at the annual Bloomberg Screentime conference in Los Angeles on Sept 30, Sarandos said live shows could provide a significant boost. Live programming accounts for 5% of Netflix’s annual US$20 billion (S$25.6 billion) content budget but generates only 1% of viewing; Sarandos said its main benefits are attracting subscribers, retaining them and supporting advertising. Films and television series will remain the company’s priority. Sarandos also said he had no regrets about Netflix’s unsuccessful attempt to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, whose assets include Warner Bros. Pictures, CNN and HBO Max. A US federal judge approved a settlement on Sept 30 clearing the way for Paramount’s takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery after Paramount Skydance won the bidding.
