Alphabet launched Gemini 4 Argon, a flagship artificial intelligence system intended to compete with leading models from OpenAI and Anthropic. The model ranks immediately behind Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Sonnet 5.5 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index and is positioned for complex workflows in software engineering, knowledge work and cybersecurity, with a 1M-token output limit. Initial access is restricted to verified cybersecurity organizations and U.S. government agencies conducting safety assessments. Pricing starts at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, matching promotional pricing for OpenAI’s GPT-6.1 Sol, although Alphabet plans to double those fees. Investor attention is also shifting toward personal AI assistants: Meta’s no-cost, usage-limited Muse surpassed 5 million downloads by the end of September, while Alphabet’s paid Spark has remained less competitive. Alphabet has not announced broader availability for Argon and is still evaluating how to integrate it into agent-based products.
