Amazon Web Services committed more than $1 billion over five years through Built Together, a program supporting communities near its U.S. data centers with job training, water preservation and energy affordability. The pledge comes as Amazon says more than 100 data center moratoriums are under consideration and as AWS manages a $496 billion backlog, with most capacity planned for 2027 already reserved and most AI capacity contracted for at least five years. Amazon's capital expenditures reached $54.21 billion in the second quarter, up 68.44% year over year, while AWS revenue rose 37% to $42.23 billion and operating margin reached 39.4%. Shares closed at $251.52 on the announcement day, up 1.33%, while trailing free cash flow stood at negative $7.6 billion. The initiative is intended to reduce local barriers that could delay facilities needed to monetize contracted demand.
