Amazon signed a 20-year contract with Constellation on September 30 to purchase 690 megawatts of electricity from the Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant in Maryland. The agreement includes 190 MW of additional supply from 2030 to 2032 through higher plant output, supporting Constellation's planned investment of more than $3 billion in upgrades. The deal follows similar commitments by Microsoft and Meta and Google's partnership with Kairos Power, as artificial intelligence data centers drive a sharp increase in electricity demand. The International Energy Agency projects global data center consumption will rise from 415 terawatt-hours in 2024 to about 950 TWh in 2030. South Korea faces comparable pressure, with projected additional 2040 demand from semiconductors, other advanced industries and AI data centers exceeding 36 GW. The discussion there centers on allowing long-term nuclear power contracts and corporate investment while addressing fairness, grid costs and the effect on other electricity consumers.
