According to Le Journal du Dimanche, the failed abduction in Villenoy adds to a sharp rise in crypto-linked kidnappings in France, where authorities are expanding security measures and investigations.
The wife of The Sandbox co-founder Sebastien Borget was reportedly targeted in an attempted kidnapping around 8:30 p.m. on May 20 at the family home in Villenoy, Seine-et-Marne. Le Journal du Dimanche reported that a man posing as a delivery worker approached the property before five masked accomplices rushed into the courtyard and tried to force her into a nearby Citroën C3, but neighbors intervened after hearing her screams and the group fled. Two suspects, identified as Mateo V., born in 2010, and Walid H., born in 2009, were later arrested after police stopped a ride-hail vehicle; authorities said they were carrying a replica handgun, plastic zip-tie restraints, and balaclavas, while four other suspects remain at large. France’s central security directorate has taken over the investigation, with early findings suggesting a link to cryptocurrency holdings. The report places the case within a broader pattern of crypto-linked kidnappings in France, citing 41 kidnappings or attempted abductions since January 1, 2026, and 135 incidents since 2023, along with recent attacks and new preventive measures announced during Paris Blockchain Week 2026.
