Donald Trump temporarily shelved military action against Iran after leaders from Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan made a last-minute effort to change his mind, Politico reported, citing officials and a diplomat. The outreach came after Trump warned on Thursday morning local time that he would take “very tough measures” against Iran “tonight.” The leaders reportedly said a preliminary agreement was within reach, and Trump later said a deal could be signed this weekend. Iran, however, said major issues remained unresolved, including transit through the Strait of Hormuz and access to more than $16 billion in frozen funds.
