Adrian Boafo won Maryland's 5th District Democratic primary on June 23, emerging from a crowded field and moving into position to succeed retiring Representative Steny Hoyer. The race drew unusually heavy outside spending, with Protect Progress, the Democratic arm of the crypto super PAC network Fairshake, spending about $5.5 million and AIPAC-linked United Democracy Project adding about $5.7 million, bringing total outside support for Boafo to roughly $11 million. Boafo's campaign itself raised $1.14 million, while Oracle executives and Coinbase employees also made direct contributions. His win adds to a string of Fairshake-backed Democratic primary victories as the crypto industry seeks to build support for legislation such as the CLARITY Act, which would help define how U.S. regulators oversee digital assets.
