The web3 gaming guild is winding down the publishing unit as it pivots toward AI training data, citing a prolonged crypto slump and weak recovery prospects for consumer crypto and game publishing.
Yield Guild Games is closing YGG Play, its game publishing division, with the website, launchpad and games including LOL Land and Waifu Sweeper set to be retired by August 1 and 35 employees losing their jobs. The company said the prolonged crypto downturn and broader weakness in game publishing made the unit commercially unsustainable, and said it no longer expects consumer crypto or Web3 game publishing markets to recover enough in the near term. YGG said the 10/10 market crash, which it said wiped out more than $19 billion in leveraged positions within 24 hours, reshaped retail trader behavior. It added that the selloff extended into 2026, with Bitcoin falling below $60,000 by mid-year and major altcoins losing 80% or more. Despite that backdrop, YGG Play generated more than $9 million in lifetime revenue through the first quarter of 2026. YGG Play, LOL Land and Waifu Sweeper will operate until July 31, while the Web3 versions of GIGACHADBAT and Ragnarok Breaker will continue under their respective studios. Yield Guild said affected staff will receive eight additional weeks of pay and support in finding new roles. The shutdown marks a sharper strategic pivot for the company, which rose to prominence during the 2021 play-to-earn boom through Axie Infinity scholarships. Yield Guild now plans to focus on the AI data economy, beginning with a business-to-business pipeline for gaming datasets, which it said positions the company in a $3.9 billion global AI training dataset market cited from Grand View Research. The move places YGG among crypto firms such as Dune Analytics that have cut staff or redirected resources toward AI during the downturn.
