The largest U.S. grocer said it is lowering prices on thousands of items, including a 12% cut to ground beef, after pressure on major supermarket chains to ease beef costs during the July 4 shopping season.
Walmart said it is cutting prices on thousands of items as part of an affordability push aimed at shoppers still strained by years of inflation. The largest U.S. grocer said the price of ground beef will fall 12%, cherries will be cut in half, and a 24-pack of Coca-Cola will drop by one-third to $9.97, alongside markdowns on household products, toys, apparel and other merchandise. The Wall Street Journal reported on July 8 that the Trump administration recently pressed Walmart, Kroger, Albertsons and other major U.S. supermarket chains to lower beef prices during the Independence Day shopping season. Walmart's cuts came even as tight cattle supply kept May U.S. ground beef prices up 12% from a year earlier, highlighting the tension between affordability efforts and elevated input costs.
