Meta is planning its first Canadian data center, an AI-focused project in Sturgeon County, Alberta, with total investment previously estimated at $10 billion to $13 billion including associated power infrastructure. In the latest disclosed power arrangement, Capital Power said it signed an energy supply agreement for 250 megawatts of capacity and energy for more than 10 years to support the Meta project, with load expected to begin service in the back half of 2028. Earlier reporting said the broader project included a 932-megawatt natural gas-fired power plant being developed with Pembina Pipeline and Kineticor, highlighting Alberta’s push to attract more than C$100 billion in data center investment through its natural gas resources, relatively low-cost power and "bring your own power" approach.
