Blue Owl launches Kirkwood IG to build U.S. fiber for hyperscale data centers

The new platform includes South Reach Networks' nearly 400-mile footprint and is building more than 200 miles across Louisiana and Mississippi as Blue Owl expands its digital infrastructure strategy.

Summary

Blue Owl Capital launched Kirkwood Infrastructure Group on July 8 as part of its Digital Infrastructure strategy, creating a dedicated platform to develop, own, and operate fiber optic cable and conduit infrastructure for hyperscale data center operators, carriers, and municipalities. The move adds a more specific emphasis on traditional connectivity assets within Blue Owl’s broader digital infrastructure push. Kirkwood IG starts with assets from South Reach Networks, including nearly 400 miles of network that connect with 40 near-net and on-net data centers and subsea cable landing stations. It is also building more than 200 miles of new conduit and fiber across Louisiana and Mississippi. Blue Owl said the leadership team has commercialized more than 600 miles of network over the past five years across multiple firm platforms. Scott Bergs will serve as CEO, with Chris Jensen, Luke Gilpin, and Aaron Small on the board. Kirkwood IG will operate independently from Blue Owl’s existing investment in Texas-based Gigabit Fiber LLC. As of mid-2025, Blue Owl’s Digital Infrastructure strategy had raised more than $39 billion and oversaw investments in over 100 facilities globally, underscoring the scale of the firm’s broader bet on long-term, contracted connectivity demand from hyperscale customers.

Terms & Concepts
  • hyperscale data center operators: Companies that run very large data centers designed for cloud, AI, and other compute-intensive workloads at massive scale.
  • fiber optic cable: Communications cable that transmits data as light signals, allowing high-speed and high-capacity connectivity.
  • subsea cable landing stations: Coastal facilities where undersea communications cables connect to terrestrial networks.
