Pollak said timing and the heavy focus on financial upgrades undermined Base’s social push, arguing current product-market fit lies more clearly in improving financial systems.
Base creator Jesse Pollak said his earlier view that onchain social platforms could help onboard the next billion users was “definitively wrong,” adding that the effort faltered because of timing and because Base needed to devote overwhelming attention to financial upgrades. Pollak said the current product-market fit is concentrated more in improving financial systems, suggesting the social initiative was not aligned with immediate market demand. He had previously reflected in a discussion with Laura Shin on the difficulties Base faced and questioned whether Robinhood may have outperformed Base in that area. The conversation is scheduled to air live today at 1 p.m. ET.
