Santiment said a reported Coldcard firmware exploit that drained more than $40 million in BTC drove record fear over self-custody and hardware wallet security, even as Bitcoin remained up on the week and month.
Bitcoin sentiment has deteriorated sharply across X, Reddit, Telegram and other platforms, with analytics firm Santiment saying the positive-to-negative commentary ratio fell to 0.58-to-1, its lowest level since its modern social tracking began. Santiment linked the slump to a reported July 31 Coldcard firmware exploit that drained more than $40 million in BTC and shook confidence in self-custody and hardware wallet security. The firm said the fear reading stood out even against shocks such as FTX, Mt. Gox and the COVID-19 market crash, and added that sentiment was hit despite Bitcoin remaining up 1.20% on the week and 4.34% on the month.
