Alibaba plans to add revenue-sharing terms to the license for its next-generation open-source Qwen AI model, requiring large commercial users to share part of the revenue generated from the model, according to people familiar with the matter. The proposed approach mirrors Moonshot's licensing structure for Kimi K3, under which users that offer the model as a service and generate more than $20 million in annual revenue must sign a commercial cooperation agreement, with revenue sharing that can reach as high as 30%. The move would mark a notable shift in how open-source AI models are monetized, as developers have typically been charged for use on a provider's cloud platform while open-source deployments in customers' own data centers have often remained free of direct usage fees.
