New Jersey records reviewed by POLITICO show that businessman Shamikh Kazmi, who manages at least six Freedom Fuel stations in the state owned by publicly traded asset manager Blue Owl, had 196 safety and environmental violations logged since 2022 before President Donald Trump and the White House promoted the discount gasoline network. The Department of Environmental Protection (state environmental regulator) issued a $429,900 penalty in May against 17 Kazmi-managed, Blue Owl-owned stations, about half tied to current Freedom Fuel sites, citing underground tank problems, false registration information, air pollution issues and repeated noncompliance; several sites were also hit with fuel delivery bans, including a brief Camden County ban on July 9. Blue Owl said it holds the properties through a triple-net lease (tenant pays most property costs), Trump has disclosed buying and selling millions of dollars in Blue Owl stock last year while retaining significant holdings, and the New Jersey Attorney General's Office is examining whether the stations also violated the state's ban on selling gasoline below cost.
