South Korea's won stayed around 1,414 per dollar, close to a more than 10-month high reached last week, after the won-dollar rate posted its widest monthly and daily swings since 2009. Bank of Korea ECOS data showed average monthly moves of 47.0 won through July and average daily moves of 8.2 won through Aug. 7; after peaking at 1,555.8 won on Aug. 2, the rate fell to 1,407.3 won before rebounding to 1,418.4 won in Seoul's regular session on the 10th. Exporter dollar selling, flows tied to SK hynix Inc.'s U.S. ADR, a reported July 31 U.S.-Japan foreign-exchange intervention to support the yen, weaker U.S. jobs data, and a 155.4% jump in chip exports in the first 10 days of August to $9.95 billion supported the won, while importer demand, overseas investment conversions, expectations for a September Federal Reserve rate hike, and higher oil prices limited further gains.
