Bernie Sanders is pressing Democratic leaders to end super PAC participation in party primaries, arguing in a letter shared exclusively with "Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan" that unlimited outside spending has created a "corrupt system." Super PACs (political groups that can raise unlimited funds) are allowed to spend independently on candidates but cannot coordinate directly with campaigns. Sanders said corporate-backed super PACs have already spent more than $517 million in the 2026 midterm election cycle and pointed to the Michigan Senate race, where Haley Stevens received more than $50 million from outside organizations before losing to Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, including $30 million from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. He said it was especially troubling that AIPAC is reportedly planning to spend "tens of millions" to support Republican Mike Rogers in the general election. Sanders also renewed his call for a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United (the 2010 ruling on independent spending) and for legislation to create public funding of elections, while saying the fastest available step is for Democrats to prohibit super PAC involvement in primaries.
