Amazon-owned Zoox will start offering paid robotaxi rides in Las Vegas on Monday, marking its first revenue-generating service after winning a first-of-its-kind exemption from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for purpose-built vehicles without a steering wheel or pedals. Las Vegas fares will combine a base charge with time and distance, with any airport or event surcharges shown before booking, while rides in San Francisco will remain free until further notice. The exemption allows commercial deployment of 2,500 Zoox vehicles each year for two years under enhanced oversight, as the company says it has already served more than half a million riders, has another half million on its waitlist, and plans to expand next to Austin and Miami while competing against Waymo's larger paid network and Tesla's more troubled rollout.
